Dance4Life OT Day By Sara Jalal & Anna Belle Hoenen

On Friday the 11th of June 2010 some of the Dance4Life Organisation Team took the train to Haarlem in order to gain some more knowledge about the charity. They had a lot to say about what they did during the day and wanted to share it with you. Once we arrived at De Lichtfabriek in Haarlem we took our first step in and we were all amazed at how Dance4life took a building like this and made it look so nice without having to pay a lot; since most of the decorations were posters. We then collected our Dance4life shirts and bags, which contained items from sponsors of Dance4life. After collecting what we needed, we went to the main hall, took our group photo and were told to start the workshop. We learnt about original and creative ideas that are well thought out. As an activity we had to think of as many ideas as possible and then choose our best idea, think about how this idea would work and finally present our idea to some of the Dance4life staff members and a few people from the Vodafone Company. The Organisation Team (OT) While we were doing this the teachers were learning about how they can help us raise money for the charity and how to get more students involved. We all then took a break, ate our lunches and watched a great performance by “The Partysquad.” Next the teachers and us were taught more about HIV, the Dance4Life charity and AIDS. We were told a sad story by a teenage girl who was born with HIV and has had to deal with the sickness all her life. To end the fun, educational and tiring day we practiced ‘The Drill’ with everyone. Everyone has shared their opinion of this day below. Magdalena Howland(y7): “The workshop was really cool especially the part at the end when we all did the drill together! When my friend and I walked in we were amazed at how they could turn a factory into such an awesome place??!! Overall it was a really fun day.” Felice Oostelbos (y7): “The workshops were a lot of fun and I really enjoyed them! But we didn't only dance in the workshops we also learnt about campaigns and most importantly HIV and AIDS. The whole day was a terrific experience and I am delighted to be in the OT of Dance4Life.” Anna Belle Hoenen (y9): “The workshop was a lot of fun. At the beginning it was slightly awkward with the group though the day became more fun and we got to know each other bit better as a group :D. We did one exercise where we had to come up with fundraising ideas and that went pretty well. Dancing on stage with The Partysquad was amazing :) until the stage broke and everybody had to get off, ha ha. Hope there's more of that to come being an OT- member!” Sara Jalal (y9): “I was an OT member last year and was glad to be given another chance to help Dance4life. I have so much knowledge from last year and have already gained more by going to the workshop. It was a lot of fun and I am happy I was able to get to know the other OT members more. I cannot wait to begin next year with Dance4life, it will be exciting, challenging and yet another experience I will not forget.” Marcelle Antunes (y11): “It was absolutely great. A wonderful experience and a fun new way to involve yourself for a good cause!” Gichuki Rugoiyo (y10): “I had fun knowing that I was able to make a difference in people's lives while having a good time. It is a fulfilling experience and hopefully everybody will want to be involved.” Xander Maes (y10): “I was bewildered at the amount of young volunteers present at the Dance4life event. it showed that everyone across the nation felt the urge to help those who are suffering from HIV. The program was well directed at the younger generation by including a party created by the well-known, "Party-Squad". I hope I am able to make a difference.” Veerle Verhey (y10): “The dance4life workshop was absolutely amazing. I had so much fun and learned so much, the day was over before I had realized it had even started. I really hope that as a school we can help people with HIV and AIDS around the world, because Dance4Life showed me just how much those people need us.” Eline Wezenbeek (y11): “I really enjoyed it and we came up with a lot of good ideas. Dancing on stage with the party squad was of course also a major highlight!” Martin Klima (y12): “I enjoyed the workshop. It was great seeing Party Squad again and getting back into the dance!!! Overall it was fun BUT all of it was in Dutch which was a disadvantage to SOME of us :P.” Going to the Dance4life workshop was a great experience for all of us, it was fun, though we all learnt a lot at the same time. We are excited and pumping with ideas for the new year with Dance4life. Dance4Life will really kick off in September 2010. However, we would like to start fundraising now! If you have any fundraising ideas or other ways to support us, please contact Mr. Veken or Mrs. Elly (t.veken@ishthehague.nl or j.elly@ishthehague.nl)
