CHESS CLUB NEWS

Through participation of 4 girls from Secondary, gender balance has been reached in the weekly chess afternoon, on Wednesdays. I trust that a regular group of 8 players will continue till the Summer break.
The secondary students will meet with equally strong opponents of the British School soon for a freindly chess encounter at the premises of the ISH.
The Primary chess sessions take place on Fridays. There is a participation of about 20 children. During the second session a demonstration board (a large board on the wall with magnetic pieces) for group chess. It proved to be a stimulating learning instrument for all children.

NEW TO THE HAGUE?

Enrol now for a warm welcome to The Hague morning on March 29th
> www.denhaag.nl

For many years now our own MUNISH has been the premier school based Model United Nations conference in the region of The Hague. Since its inauguration approximately 20 years ago, MUNISH has inspired numerous schools to produce their own MUN conference; the latest of these is the Gymnasium Haganum, our neighbour at the other end of the Laan van Meerdervoort.
HagaMUN first took place last weekend and I was privileged to be the President of the General Assembly. The three day conference was held partly at the Peace Palace and partly in the gothic revival school building of the Haganum. It was a very enjoyable and lively conference with many eager beginning delegates who we hope to see at future conferences and maybe even at MUNISH 2010!
It was an honor to preside at such a prestigious institution as the ICJ even if the bleary eyed delegates did not have the gravitas of the ornate leather arm chairs’ usual occupants.
I am happy to report that HagaMUN is a welcome addition to the MUN calendar as I’m sure Meredith Sambu (year 12), who stepped into the breach to fill an unexpected vacancy as one of the chairs of the fourth committee, would concur.

The MR explained:
Every school in the Netherlands receiving funding from the government is linked with a Medezeggenschapsraad (MR). This is roughly translated as “Participation Council.” The MR allows parents, students and staff to be able to advise on, have a say in, or give consent or approval, to certain determined matters.

The MR is regulated by law, called WMS (Wet Medezeggenschap Scholen, 2007)
All the rights and responsibilities of the MR are set out in this legislation.

The MR of our school is comprised of three parents, two students and five staff members (teaching and non-teaching), elected by the bodies they represent. Over the school year there are 6 to 8 meetings. MR meetings are public, as are the minutes.

The MR has the competence to discuss all matters that concern the general course of events of the school. The committee also holds, according to the governing legislation, two types of rights: the right of advice (adviesrecht) and the right of approval (instemmingsrecht).

If you have items to raise or you are interested in the work of the MR, please contact your representatives for further information.
