‘Mr Jalland and Eddie Search for the Northern Lights’

This is the title of the upcoming short documentary film from the Visual Arts Department. The film will be shot on location, well above the Artic-Circle, in the town of Tromso, Norway on this weekend Feb 13th to 15th. Mr Jalland (Visual Arts and Environments AOI Leader) and Eddie (the Concierge) will be joined by Camera-man (Building Manager) Mr Zijderduin and Sound and Technical Assistant Adriana Trivino (Visual Arts/DT Assistant). Additional editing and film technique will be provided by Mac the AV man.

The Northern Lights, otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis is a natural light display which takes in the Polar regions. It is caused by space weather which is actually a solar wind. The light is created by charged particles being funnelled by the earths magnetic field. The colour of the light is created by oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere. This all takes place about 50 to 80 km above the ground. Fascinating, even more so, when you imagine that there is more energy in this light show than all the power stations on the planet put together.

“The reason we are making this film is to draw attention to the awesome beauty and wonder of the natural world we live in “ says Mr Jalland. “ I want students, staff and their families to get involved, that's why we are going to start a film competition”.

Entry details for the ISH Film Competition ‘Natural Phenomena’ will be announced shortly. In the meantime look out for our film about our quest to find the Northern Lights. Coming to a screen near you soon.

This is an ISH, (Environments AOI), Stroom Den Haag Sponsored Project.
